ASTM F703 Gel Bleeding*

ASTM F703 describes the observation of gel bleeding in silicone breast implants. Each implant is placed on a 70-durometer platinum-cured silicone disk with a diameter of 50 mm. Implants and silicone disks are stored in 43.3°C for eight weeks. Every week the silicone disk is removed and weighed on a precision scale. Silicone disks stored without implants are used as a control group. The weight changes in the silicone disks represent the gel bleed of the breast implants.
The ASTM demands a minimum of three samples and three control disks.
