ASTM F2582 Impingement Test

For this purpose, the cup and the femoral component (consisting of hip stem and head) are fixed separately in order to enable relative movements between the two components. At the beginning of the test, the femoral component is oriented such that there is neither internal/external rotation nor flexion/extension. An abduction of the femoral component is then performed until contact is made with the cup (starting point of the test). During the test, an axial force of 600 N is applied to the cup while a dynamic movement of the femoral component (abduction 0 - 5°, inner/outer rotation -5 - 5° and flexion 0 - 10°) is performed. One million cycles are tested at a maximum frequency of 3 Hz.

Monolithic and modular hip cups made of plastic, metal or ceramic can be tested.
